Weird isn’t it? We all just want to have a good life and be
happy, we work hard to create safety, comfort, and ease, but peace is still so lacking between nations, factions, families,
and within our own heads! The odds are high that something is troubling you or someone you know, that the suffering has continued
for some time, you’ve tried to make it better, and you still don’t know what to do. We all
feel this kind of pain. There’s a reason for it, and the way out is to better understand our misconceptions and proper
purpose of feelings.
Feeling emotional and commotional causes a lot of pain for you and everyone
else. So why did the great master Yogi Bhajan call emotions the Senses of the Soul? I’ve spent 10 years answering that
question for myself an in trying to help others have discovered a most profound tool for internal guidance and healing: our
feelings! With a little instruction and practice, you can gain skills with the natural equipment you have to live well. The

Emotions: A Big Problem
and the Solution
We all have thoughts, lots of thoughts,
rapidly changing. We have a ‘gut reaction” to each of our own thoughts: a feeling. We experience our reality through
the filter of thousands of thoughts and millions of feelings. When these are pleasant and productive, life is good. When they
are dark, heavy, uncomfortable, life is a living hell.. We are going along just fine then it starts: a familiar situation
triggers a reaction, then a cascade of thoughts, feelings, behaviors and results ending in some undesired outcome: a fight,
getting hurt, depression, isolation, loss of confidence, less success at our intended goal. We feel worse, and that makes
us act worse. It continues until hopefully the storm passes. We begin a new day…until it begins again!
Difficult emotions don't gee good, and they get us in trouble, they are
not wanted, and we think of them as "bad". They torment us, so we distract, avoid, do anything not to have those
haunting thoughts and related feelings. Then we are told they are wrong, and not to trust our feelings. From parents and friends
to religion and culture we’re taught that fear, anger, depression, guilt are weaknesses, so we try to be brave, nice,
strong, and good…but they don’t stop, and we can’t control them. All we want is a little peace and happiness!
To resolve this dilemma, let’s go to the researchers who have studied
the inner workings of body-mind-spirit-consciousness the longest: the yogis. These scientists of the inner world found that
thoughts will not cease, so feelings will always flow, and that mind is a most powerful servant but is not meant to be our
boss. This is a fundamental problem for our happiness, when the servant, unequipped to run the show, takes over.
So who is the master? It’s that part of you that is aware that you
are reading this, that can hear your own thoughts. It’s called meta-cognition; we have the ability to be aware that
we are aware. When that “Observer” is very quiet and clear it talks as well as listens; it has an abundance of
valuable information and guidance. We will call it Soul. This approach doesn’t depend on the belief of a soul to be
effective and produce a very positive benefit.
When we do relate
to and experience Soul, it is more a feeling that a thought. All things subtle and invisible like love, joy, peace, God, soul
- are feelings! The great spiritual truths are all pleasures that are felt! Can we deny and ignore our "bad" feelings
and expect to feel only the good stuff? No more than you can be blind only to the things you don’t like without being
blind to all. But if you are sensitive to all emotions, you CAN choose to focus on what you prefer to feel. Then you can feel
Soul.

Just as
the 5 senses guide us to get what we need physically, thoughts and emotions detect, describe, and guide the quality of our
living reality. Imagine an undisturbed Peace patiently standing by for you to take it in and feel it any time no matter what
is happening to you. Unpleasant feelings are the clues of what to avoid in order to reach that experience, and your enjoyable
emotions are the sign that you are “getting warmer”, or headed in the right direction in life.
Principles of Emotion: SOS
- We have within us a system of guidance and
self-healing to handle and thrive in any situation life gives us.
-Every thought creates a feeling, and tens of thousands of both are generated by the mind each second.
-Mind must serve you, your highest well-being and purpose. You must not
to be subject to it.
-Soul can be defined as the faculty
in charge of your highest good, and that which has direct access to the broadest awareness.
-We have a sophisticated “sensory system” to guide us through life with ever-increasing wellbeing.
-Emotions are a key part of our sensory system which also includes 5 senses,
intellect, and intuition.
-Emotions are The Senses of
the Soul, able to detect and correct how things are going for us in life.
-Emotions are most often misunderstood and misused in 2 ways, either by ignoring and repressing or by
reacting impulsively under their direct control.
-Correct
use requires processing them through the intellect, with full awareness of their message, purpose, and intent.

With
the correct approach that emotions are your guides, you understand and use your them to live a more fulfilled life. Since
they are our natural equipment, the skills to using all emotions are simple and easy to lean. The specialized purpose of the
various emotions must be learned and practiced for best results. I have found that this simple change of approach to emotions
has helped many people go inside and discover the power and wisdom within. Use any meditation technique to get calm, quiet,
and clear, then go in and talk to your friends (even if they are unpleasant at first). Work things out, ask questions, ask:
